Travel Diary // Elafonisos

About. Elafonisos is a very small island in the Aegean Sea, between the South-Eastern part of Peloponnese, named Lakonia, and Kythira island. It is in a driving distance of approx. 4,5 hours from Athens and there are ferries that take you from the mainland to the island where the trip takes less than 10 minutes!

Beaches. Simos, the small one. Period! Yes there also other sandy beaches lika Panagia and Big Simos, but none of them can compare to small Simos. You have to walk a 10 min. distance on the sand, which is annoying sweating under the sun, but you will be rewarded by the serenity of the scenery and the crystal clear waters. I have visited many sandy beaches but this one, small Simos, is like you are in Paradise! Just like DiCaprio's The Beach, but without the sharks!!

Where to Stay. Accommodation is not a key strength of the island and since I wasn't very pleased, I will leave it up to you to find a place to stay. There are many options of rooms and apartments, but camping is also a great choice for those of you who feel more adventurous.

Where to Eat. Just like accommodation, food is not one of the island's main strengths. Although there are many, most of them are below average. However, I can recommend a few: Spyros-Spyridoula has great sea-food, fresh lobster and fish, but the service is not very good and it is a bit pricey; Kuzini has great service and a refreshing watermelon salad, but sometimes I felt like some of the food was pre-cooked and re-heated. Boukas also has great and quick service and the food is pretty decent.
